Grumpy Monkey is a cute book that lets us know it is ok to be grumpy for a little while because we will feel better soon. We get to choose our monkeys expression or create our own. In this art project, we will explore the element of Texture and watercolor resist technique.

Did you know:

Some monkeys live on the ground, while others live in trees.

Different monkey species eat a variety of foods, such as fruit, insects, flowers, leaves and reptiles.

Groups of monkeys are known as a ‘tribe’, ‘troop’ or ‘mission’.

Monkeys have unique finger prints just like humans.

Monkeys have large brains for their size and are thought to be very intelligent.

They are very good care givers to their young.

Monkeys are highly social mammals primates.

Texture

  • Definition:
    • In art, Texture is how something feels or looks like it feels.

Watercolor Resist Technique

  • Definition:
    • Draw with crayon (wax base) or oil pastels (oil based) first. Then paint over it with water color and the magic happens! The wax or oil repels the water off of it and the drawing shows through beautifully.

Things you will need

As a teacher, I have found that gathering your supplies and resources before starting your art project makes creating art so much more fun.

The following are some ideas for this project I hope you will find helpful.

Idea one: Gather the supplies listed on the supply list.

Idea two: Don’t be afraid to fill up the background with leaves. When the leaves overlap it makes a great texture and it feels more like a full jungle. Fill up your background.

Idea three:  You can create your own monkey face expression or for ideas print out this Monkey faces Handout.

Project Time

Before we start a project it is always a good plan to review the supplies and other things that may be needed. You do not want to get into the project only to learn that you do not have that one essential item. Let’s review now, Click here..
