Surprise Tiger!

Suprised painting by Henri Rousseau
collage of a tiger in the jungle

We are learning about the artist Henri Rousseau in this art project. Henri Rousseau is a very famous self taught artist who painted house plants to look like jungles and animals from the zoo who lived in his jungles. His work was criticized because his shapes were flat, but he liked them that way and continued to paint.

One of his paintings featured a tiger in the jungle that he named Surprise. We will create our masterpiece inspired by this paintng.

Warm and Cool Colors

  • Definition:
    • Warm and Cool Colors are a basic type of color scheme
    •  Warm colors tend to make things look closer. They are generally reds, yellows, and oranges. I ask my students to think of warm things and they often talk about the sun or fire.
    • Cool colors tend to push things into the background. They are generally blues, purples, and greens. When asked my students talk about water and grass to describe cool colors.

Things you will need

As a teacher, I have found that gathering your supplies and resources before starting your art project makes creating art so much more fun.

The following are some ideas for this project I hope you will find helpful.

Idea one: Gather the supplies listed on the supply list.

Idea two: Use the 3 x 6 green scrap paper to put the stamps on while you paint. when you are done painting and stamping the leaves you can also put the remaining paint on the paper randomly. You will make several leaves from this paper and the added texture will make them more interesting.

Idea three: This can get a little messy but so worth the mess. Just have a damp cloth or sink nearby to wash off the little ones hands quickly before you have that not so adorable finger painting on your wall.

Idea four: Here is how you make the foam stamps.

Project Time

Before we start a project it is always a good plan to review the supplies and other things that may be needed. You do not want to get into the project only to learn that you do not have that one essential item. Let’s review now, Click here..
